Riley Sinclair has man problems. Trouble is, everyone has one but her.

After years on the sidelines at weddings, the head of Sinclair Construction now sits home alone on what used to be girls night. Her only companions are television, a bottle of wine and a crush on a stranger she doesn’t have the guts to approach. Too bad she isn’t more like the daring heroine of her favorite show Hot Mess. Men want to bed and wed the glamorous Delilah Cole, while rough-around-the-edges Riley is relegated to the friend zone.

Enter the perfect solution - an interactive app where the star of Hot Mess dishes style, beauty and relationship advice guaranteed to transform any woman into a man magnet. Riley re-invents herself, and thanks to the app, is on the brink of landing her dream man…and another she didn’t count on. Soon Riley’s embroiled in her own hot mess and has to choose between the Cinderella fairytale with the man she wants or the soul deep passion found only in the arms of the man she needs.

My Review

Girl. GIRL! I have to admit to not reading Phyllis Bourne before but you can bet your sweet behind that I will be catching up on her backlist, because this book is GOOD. Phyllis says her motto is BIG DUMB SEXY FUN and all of it was in this book. Funny, romantic, engaging and a very fulfilling read with some hints to followup novels so yay!

I typically don’t read ‘funny‘ books but the way the humor is set up in “Between a Rock and a Hot Mess” you just can’t help but laugh! Poor Riley isn’t trying to be funny, she just IS. I so identified with her being the last one in the group unmarried, sitting at home watching TV alone because her other girls have men in their lives. And of course she could have one too if she had the nerve to talk to her dream guy, the one she stalks twice a day, every day.

Lucky for Riley, she has $10 to spare for an expensive app and a friend that likes to shop. Very soon she is not so rough around the edges, which catches the eye of her longtime nemesis, Hudson Parker. Parker Construction is not only a business competitor, but their sports teams have been beating Sinclair Construction the last two seasons– and Riley isn’t willing to give up that trophy this year.

But Hudson wants to give Riley so much more than that trophy… he wants to give her the *static* but anyway……. after a heroic gesture on her part, Riley finds herself the object of affection of not one but TWO men. What a difference an app makes!

Which will she choose? The man of her dreams, the one she wants? Or the man she can’t stand, but the one she needs?

Let me also point out that I love love LOVE novels where women are in non traditional jobs, in supervisory roles. That Riley is the HEAD CHICK IN CHARGE was a serious draw to this novel– it played well and I loved it!

Really excellent read from Ms. Bourne and since this is her first indie release, I have to say I’m happy that we’re going to keep hearing from her!
