Everyone’s asking me when the sequel to Ruby’s is coming and honestly, I have no idea. Mostly because the book isn’t talking to me yet. And because a week or so ago, another plot bunny came and sat in my yard. And wouldn’t leave. I’m running with it.
So I’m doing this dance again, it seems! Back to the beginning. Back to worrying if I suck. Back to worrying if I can finish this book. Back to ONE all over again. But this time… I’m more confident. I know I can do it, because I’ve done it before.
Job #1 is story planning… mapping out the new project in my head, and then on paper. I’m about four chapters/10K words in. At this point I like to stop and figure out where I am and where I’m going. I’ve written about my writing process before but a few links I’m working with tonight:
Six Pre-Writing Steps – Roni has spent countless hours putting together links and worksheets for fellow writers. Her ‘For writers’ link on her website has been invaluable to me!
Emotional Journeys and External Plots– Jami is a Paranormal Author that has shared tons of knowledge with the writing community. She has a great archive of spreadsheets– her Beat Sheets are great!
Guides to the Inner Struggle- Fiction University– Janice Hardy is another author that has given back to the community with Fiction University.
All of three of these posts mention Michael Hague, who runs workshops on story planning. Since I’ve been unable to attend a workshop, the next best thing is other writers talking about them and giving examples on how to use his tips.
Very helpful, even if I can’t answer all the questions right now. From here, it’s another step further in writing… moving the story forward!
BTW: I’m keeping the details of this project under wraps for a little while. I want to make sure it works before I start bragging about it!
