Update: Orange is the New Black and writing

Last night I finally finished Orange is the New Black,  by Piper Kerman. I don’t typically read non fiction but the subject matter really interested me after I saw her appearance on the Today show. I downloaded the book right away to my Kindle app and have been slowly reading it. For some reason, prison stories really interest and mesmerize me. I’m always fascinated by the odd feeling of ‘home’ that inmates admit to after awhile and how innovative they can be in their efforts to make daily life bearable. There was no shortage of  such ingenuity in this book as Piper takes the reader through her journey as a […]

Fin. (Pre-editing, of course)

Needs to be edited, finessed a bit, but I actually finished Same Time Next Week. I’m in shock. It’ll actually end up being 21 chapters on the archive because one chapter is over 10K words and the archive holds, at most, ~10K words at a time, so ch 19 will end up being split. I mean, I started this story Nov 1, 2009. It only took me almost a year to finish it. I hope it’s not lame and doesn’t seem like I just wanted to get it done… everything I wanted to accomplish with it, I did. Wrapped up my loose ends and made sure each character came full […]

Get Your Words Out ~ August 2010

Another month, another word count. Again, I’m only counting words I’ve used in fictional works and not blogs. Not that I’ve blogged lately or anything. On with it… August was pretty good, with a total of 24,019 words. This is thanks, mostly, to a new short(er) story that I wrote for Awesome August that was nearly 7000 words. otherwise my total would be far below 20,000.  I was pretty proud of that story, too. This brings my total to 252,453 words for the year. Not bad at all. My goal of 300,000 is only about 47K words away. I’ve been trying to think of a NaNo topic for this year… I can’t […]

Something New

Wow. I can’t even believe I did but I wrote something new. And it was short. And complete. Who am I??? And what have I done with the woman who writes 400,000 word stories and can’t finish them? Oh, wait. She’s still here. Over at the fanfiction archive I thought it would be fun to do a challenge called AwesomeAugust, where writers sign up for a day and on that day, post a new, complete story that they want. It would get writers… well… writing and it would produce at least 31 new stories for the archive. We like new stories, and considering how dry the fandom is these days, […]

Get Your Words Out: July

Get Your Words Out: July

Yessssssss. My goal of 300K is well within my grasp. It’s August and I am already close! I decided, for the rest of the year, to ONLY count my fiction words. While my blog posts are important to me, I want to focus on my writing specifically to write, to further my development of skills, to finish my WIPs, to start new stories, to achieve 300K words this year purely on my own merit. July saw the return of Same Time Next Week, my 2009 NaNoWriMo piece. It is, as of yet unfinished but it’s close. I have a goal to try to get to that piece this week and […]

My Hero…

My Hero…

I’m kind of hoping he never sees this post… but the possibility that he could pick it up somewhere via the internet means I shouldn’t say things like ‘I never paid attention to him before’. Alas… Dave Holmes has been out of my memory for as long as MTV hasn’t played videos and he wasn’t hosting my favorite bands on MTV Live and TRL. Out of sight, out of mind. Last Monday, one of my occaisional guilty pleasures, The Baub Show, hosted Dave to talk about his new project. It seems Dave is writing a book. And I had no clue the man was a writer. I listened, with rapt […]

Well hello, old friend…

The weirdest thing has been happening, all week. Well, first of all, I’ve been writing. Which after such a dry spell is a great miracle. My latest entry of AIWD was so difficult to complete! I wrote the chapter three times and still didn’t really accomplish what I wanted with it, but the third rendition was the closest. I am learning to not be afraid to scrap things and start over. It’s never going to be perfect out of the gate. Since I was having such a hard time with the last chapter of AIWD, I was longing for something new and different to write, to get me out of […]

GYWO: Wordy June

GYWO: Wordy June

Hello all. Been a while since I blogged over here. I’d apologize, but it appears that I’ve been writing instead of blogging… which is totally fine with me! It is month end, which means another update to my Get Your Words Out tally. Last month was a banner month for writing, and this month I did even better. I’ve been on a few “missions” the last couple of months, which is generating a lot of words. This makes me happy. My total for the month of June, through about 5pm today, is 40,001 words. WOW! I hit about 35K words last month, which was my biggest month so far. Half […]

Get Your Words Out, May!

Get Your Words Out, May!

Wow, what a good month! I totally kicked myself in the booty over my low April number. I’ve been letting myself get distracted and disinterested in writing, feeling a little down and ‘untalented’ about it. A chat with a friend put me back in the place where I wrote because I loved doing it, not because of people’s reactions, feedback and reviews. The Blogfests helped too, to get me into the writing mood, even though I didn’t even use one of the pieces I wrote and I didn’t do all 3 that I signed up for. It just goes to show that every little bit helps– I even upped my […]

Reading and Writing and ‘Rithmetic

Does anyone remember that song? School days, school days, dear old golden rule days…. I am old. Wow. it’s a loooonnnggg weekend, and coming up on the end of the month, which means a  GYWO word count, yay! I actually got back to some writing this month, which feels good. Getting away from needing a pat on the back for every little step and just… writing (even though I did send a very rough draft to a friend for reading because I am special like that. And she was bored. Sue me), so I’ll be adding more to that story before I go back and edit words out. I wrote […]
