Hey, I like what you've done with the place since the last time I was here!

The first fifty pages are always the toughest part for me. Even though I've already outlined everything to within an inch of my life, nothing *ever* goes right in the first fifty pages, and I always end up feeling like the biggest phony alive. But somehow, once I hammer my way to page fifty-one, things start falling into place. I started keeping a writing journal, and it's so comforting to look back and see that I went through the same agony at the beginning of the last story I wrote!

Yeah, I just arc'd the heck out of the main story line, and I can think of two other interweaved lines that I need to arc as well.

Thus far, I've been just jumping into projects with no planning whatsoever and like you, I'm tire of the random nature. I'm leaving big enough holes so that I can still create, but I need some mile markers along the way so that I know where the heck I am driving to, otherwise will end up at the Grand Canyon, going 'wtf?'

I found that blurb to be really helpful. I may try to locate that book and take it on vacation with me so I can work on it while I'm away. I'm glad it helped more than just me!

BTW, I got the book yesterday! Thanks so much! \o/

I really enjoyed the snippet you just posted -- incredibly helpful! Don't worry, I totally feel your pain... and I so agree with you. The opening is the easiest for me, the point where I feel completely exhilarated to be stepping into a new world with a fantastic new character... and I haven't started worrying yet about "where it's all going."

Yeah. Then reality sets in -- and I start panicking. Where is this going? What is my point? Who are these people, anyway? Normally I just write and write and write... and eventually end up somewhere. But I decided recently that I was tired of the randomness of it all. I started coming up with character charts, listing personality traits, etc. I usually hate that sort of thing, but it's actually helped me a lot!

Definitely going to look into the book you suggest! And don't worry, dear Miss M -- I'm sure you're on the right path. We'll get that arc in motion! :)
